Of Warps, Wefts, and Weddings: The Making and the Meaning(s) of the Valois Tapestries

Exquisite examples of Renaissance luxury art, the eight hangings collectively known as the Valois Tapestries present a spectacular vision of 16th century courtly life in France. Commissioned by Catherine de Medici for her dearly beloved granddaughter, this talk explores how the tapestries’ political context, technical fabrication, and the personal lives of its makers and patrons can be woven together.
